Story 12 of 52 /// The memories so distant

Story 12 of 52 /// The memories so distant

You were born in China, but you were only twenty months old when we repatriated. That time seems so long ago, the memories so distant. Literally.

We moved back to the small town we came from, and rarely tell the stories of our international assignment as the experience is so far away from the daily lives of the people here. At times it feels as if we pretend we were never there.

You love the pictures of your early childhood in this far-away place, and love listening to the stories that go with them. Your favorite story is the one that goes with the picture of you riding the scooter of your “JièJiè” (the nickname used in China for children to refer to an older female friend) around our compound. You glow with pride when you tell this story: you acquired this skill when you could barely walk, and you paint the picture of your ayi (nanny) and your friends cheering you on so well.

On outer appearance you seem to be where you belong in this village of ours, surrounded by your extended family and by friends that look just like you.

It is amazing to see how you feel such a strong connection to this country you only know from the stories and the pictures. Thankfully you will remind everyone that there is more to this world. As you were born in China, you consider yourself anything but local: you are Dutch ánd Chinese.
