Employee Relations (ER)

Employee Relations (ER)

entry by Julie M. Marx, Global Family Expert at Expat Valley

Employee Relations, often abbreviated as ER, is the HR function responsible for shaping, maintaining, and repairing the relationship between an organization and its employees through policies, communication channels, and issue resolution processes. In international assignments, ER frames how concerns about workload, discrimination, safety, or family impact are raised and addressed, and it strongly influences whether mobile employees feel heard and protected.

Why this matters

Including ER in the glossary highlights that global mobility is not only about logistics and policy, but also about trust, voice, and psychological safety for employees and their families. Clear employee relations practices make it more likely that assignees and partners will speak up early about adjustment strain, schooling problems, or partner career disruption, which in turn can prevent escalation to assignment failure.
