Story 8 of 52 /// The epitome of a Third Culture Kid

“I’m sitting here thinking that we have to rethink the way we look at this. This is how the world is turning. Instead of having to make a choice, why can’t she be both?
Eileen Gu is living her best life. She loves both countries and feels just as American as she is Chinese. It is very much okay to connect one’s identity to a country, but we shouldn’t have to make the children choose either/or.
She is showing us there is a new way to think and celebrate. She represents what is happening in our world. More and more. There are so many children like her. They are called Third Culture Kids.
The most difficult thing is for other people to understand that her story is ok. The point is she has these gifts. She can be that bridge between nations, and a force of unity. For the greater good.
The world would be a much better place if we would educate ourselves how growing up across borders and amongst cultures could actually benefit everyone and offer a better vision for the future.”
