Story 22 of 52 /// It strangely felt like coming home
Moving to a new country was such a blessing for me. My parents never really made it explicit to me, but I was a gifted learner. And I was really bored in school.
I was born while my parents were on assignment, I always identified myself as someone from another country. So while moving felt as if I was leaving everything and everyone I knew behind, at the same time it strangely felt like coming home.
I remember being super excited about the idea of learning a new language. And my parents were confident that with the support of my mother’s employer, they would be able to find a good school for me. And they did. The international school I attended really catered to students like me. The learning environment focused on teaching us critical thinking skills and the resources seemed unlimited. I learned so much and really built the confidence I never really gained in school back home. It felt as if I had so much more in common with these children from other countries, than with the children from my school back home.
The move I made as a child really changed the direction of the rest of my life. I still love the international lifestyle and that influences many of the decisions I make, in my relationships and my career. I’m a proud global citizen.
