Story 2 of 52 /// After you hang up the phone, you decline the offer

Imagine being a medical researcher from India, not just any, but the type that is at the stage of their career to lead medical breakthroughs.

Now imagine receiving a phone call, a job offer to come work in the Netherlands for the most prestigious company in your field. The contract offered is amazing.

What this company does not realize is that you have a daughter. She is sixteen, she has ADHD. It’s been ups and downs but she is in a good place now, on her way to high school graduation and a bright future.

You apply with admissions of the international school closest to the company’s office location. The school informs you that they can’t accommodate your daughter due to her special needs. You don’t mind a longer commute if another school is able to support her. You hear there is one international school in another region that has a special needs department. Admissions informs you there is no space availability, but they might be able to make it work.

Talent Acquisition suggests you speak to another family, they have a similar background and are now living in the Netherlands. They trust that you will feel reassured after hearing their story. You appreciate the offer and have an insightful phone call with the other family.

After you hang up the phone, you decline the offer.

You learned from them that even when you are able to secure a space for her, it will not be easy to continue finding solutions that support her future. And that while the company is very involved with supporting you when you first join them. The same department and their support systems won’t be around down the road, when you and your family are living life in a foreign country.

Your family has made so many sacrifices for your career already. While this job could change the world, it’s been enough. This company appears to be incredibly supportive, but you don’t have the feeling they truly understand the challenges of living across borders with a child with special needs.
